  • WHY LOW AND SLOW GRILLING IS BETTER FOR YOU

  • Mouthwatering delicious and tender Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, or Ribs. Is YOUR mouth watering? Because I know mine is. So what is the best way to grill those and other yummy delicious foods?

Have you heard of the “low and slow” grilling method? Come on, don’t be shy, you can admit it. And don’t feel bad, my 5 year old probably doesn’t know either. But, he doesn’t need to, he’s five remember?

WHAT IS LOW AND SLOW GRILLING?

Low and Slow is just that. Low cooking temperature and the slow cooking time. When you cook larger pieces of meat in this way, the meat will be so tender it will literally fall apart. So what are the advantages of low and slow grilling?

LOW AND SLOW GRILLING HELPS RETAIN THE NATURAL OILS AND MOISTURE OF THE FOOD

If cooked at a low temperature, the oil and moisture from the food is not destroyed, which in turn, helps retain the natural flavor and aroma of the food. Oh yes, I can smell it now too!

LOW AND SLOW GRILLING HELPS RETAIN THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF THE FOOD

Some proteins and vitamin compounds can break down at high temperatures. But low temperatures help to retain these nutrients.

LOW AND SLOW GRILLING HEATS TO THE INSIDE BEFORE THE OUTSIDE GETS BURNED

For good cooking, it is important for the heat to spread evenly throughout. This can be achieved with the low and slow method.

SOME STUDIES CLAIM LOW AND SLOW GRILLING GIVES YOU A LESSER CHANCE OF CANCER

Researchers conducting studies have found high-temperature cooking creates a chemical called Acrylamide, in the food. Basically, high amounts of this in your diet can cause cancer. If you want to read up on it more, check this this article posted by the FDA: https://www.fda.gov/food/foodborneillnesscontaminants/chemicalcontaminants/ucm053549.htm

So what have we learned? Besides that my five year old may, or may not, know more then you do about grilling? Cooking over low heat slowly ensures that the food is never overheated, thus sparing the nutrients while making the food more easily digested and assimilated. It also makes it taste delicious!
